We’ve been hearing about the supposed Apple brand self-driving electric car. But any solid progress on the idea remains absent. Though that may change soon. The tech giant is reportedly in talks with Nissan to produce the vehicle. Just kidding, they said no.

According to a report by the Financial Times, Apple and Nissan met to discuss a potential partnership regarding the Apple Car. They also report that the talks ended in disagreement regarding the branding. The talks were shorter than average, with Nissan supposedly not interested in producing an Apple-branded car. As such, it’s now a safe bet to say that Nissan will not be the producer for the vehicle.

This puts Apple in a slightly more difficult situation. The brand has no automotive experience, more or less forcing them to partner with an existing automaker if they want to make the Apple Car a reality. And with Kia and Hyundai having both rejected Apple in the past (also for branding concerns), they’re slowly running out of options.

Reports also indicate that Apple is talking with General Motors and Stellantis. Though there is no confirmation of these talks are regarding car production.

EVs and self-driving technology are both at the forefront of automotive advancement. Nearly every automaker is rushing to get to the front of that line. While Apple may be a top name in personal electronics, they’re not showing the power and momentum they need if they want to try to break into the autonomous EV successfully. No one wanting to help is only slowing them down more.

We aren’t tremendously bothered by this, though. Apple products are already notoriously overpriced. Can you imagine a Tesla Model S at Apple prices? No thank you.
