With the rise of the late 2000’s came a vehicle cabin game changer: digital instrument clusters and infotainment screens. Now Mercedes-Benz is taking that technology to as much of an extreme as they can with a screen stretching over the entire dashboard.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan, a new flagship electric by the automaker, will feature what they’re calling the MBUX Hyperscreen. This 56-inch wide digital screen will run along the entire width of the vehicle’s dashboard, offering an infotainment and digital instrument cluster all in a single flat space.

Well, we shouldn't say “flat,” since the screen actually uses a curved OLED screen with three designated zones. The first zone is the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. This will provide your standard array of driving data, like MPH speed and RPM. The second screen, positioned in the center, will act as the main infotainment center, displaying media information, a built in GPS system, and so on. The third, positioned in front of the passenger seat, will provide additional controls and options intended for passengers.

MB also boasts about an “AI” interface that automatically shows the relevant menus and applications based on the context of the vehicle. The idea is that it saves the driver from having to fiddle with control menus. We remain uneasy about this feature, however. There have been plenty of times that companies have tried similar ideas and they were more annoying than helpful.

Tech-wise, the Hyperscreen is oddly powerful. Running an 8-core CPU with 24 GB of RAM, this makes it more powerful than some of the lower end laptops on the market, with more RAM than most computers in general. We aren’t sure why so much power is needed for the screen, but it certainly shouldn't have any lag or delay.

The MBUX Hyperscreen will debut on the 2021 EQS sedan and 2022 crossover. It’ll possibly be available on other models with the same production window, as well. It’s certainly sleek.
