One of the most tedious parts of restoring classic cars is finding the original parts. Anyone can slap in a modern carburetor, but where's the fun in that? Unfortunately, some parts simply aren't around anymore. Mercedes-Benz understands that struggle, and they are working with the 300SL's original suppliers to bring back the previously impossible to find checkered upholstery.

The fabrics will go by their original code numbers and will be produced according to factory specifications with 100 percent wool yarn. Mercedes-Benz kept special attention towards ensuring the original pattern is replicated as close as possible. There will be three color options available: blue/gray, red/green, and green/beige.

According to the carmaker, nearly 80% of all 300SL models made from 1954 to 1957 came with the blue/gray checkered design on their backrests, seat side bolsters, and seatbacks. Premium packages could replace this with leather, though it was less common. The red/green pattern was the second-most-popular choice with 14% of 300SLs wearing it, while the green/beige is quite uncommon. Just 6 percent of the sports cars wear the pattern.

The vehicle's supplier will firmly adhere to the standards of quality expected of the original cars. Expect four-ply double-weave twill with the natural odor-neutral property of wool.

Mercedes' supplier will adhere to the strict quality controls when producing the material, which means buyers will receive four-ply double-weave twill. It also contains the odor-neutral property of wool.

Interested parties can purchase the material by the meter, at $227 per meter. Depending on your location, you can order the material from Mercedes directly, or at a local dealer.
