Hyundai is really upping their incentives now, offering free charging when you get a particular electric vehicle model.

The automaker is partnering with Electrify America to offer a new incentive. If you purchase a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric or Ioniq Electric, you’re also granted 250 kilowatt-hours of charge for free (which equates to about 1,000 miles on these particular models.) The system is done through Electrify America, a public charging network company.

According to Kyundai, the partnership was to help provide additional peace of mind for car-buyers about the idea of buying an electric vehicle. With the two vehicle models priced in the $40k range, incentives like this are potent enough to attract your average consumer.

While convenient, it doesn’t address some of the most common issues with electrics currently. Despite the difference between the Kona’s 64-kWh battery and the Ioniq’s 38-kWh pack, they both will take about an hour to achieve 80% charge. While that’s fairly quick by electric car standards, it can be off-putting for those accustomed to the couple-minute refill time of a traditional combustion engine.

Of course, this also is limited to locations where Electrify America is present. While their electric charging station infrastructure is expanding at a notable rate, it’s still not the level of convenience of a traditional gas station. There’s only one within 50 miles of my house, for example.

There's no word as to how long this promotional deal will last. So interested individuals may want to inquire at their local dealer for more information.
