Hyundai is stepping back into the spotlight with their latest concept: The Tiger X-1, a “walking” mini rover. And it can walk.

The Korean automaker recent unveiled their concept for the Tiger X-1 (it stands for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot, Experimental version 1). This small, four wheeled rover has legs that can extend into various positions, allowing it to traverse uneven, rocky, or otherwise difficult terrain. I can even “walk” if it has to.

The main focus behind the Tiger X-1 is to aid search and rescue, scientific research, military, and even interstellar exploration. To fit this, it would need to be both small and extremely mobile. Measuring at only one foot tall (when scrunched up) and 1.5 feet long, it’s able to both be transported with relative ease, and able to gain access to some tight locations. That’s not to say its staying that size. Hyundai has said that the system is modular in nature, allowing it to be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Battery powered, charge and horsepower were unsaid. They did mention the idea of adding solar panels or an internal combustion engine could further extend range.

Currently, the Tiger is in the technological phase at their Silicon Valley-based New Horizon Studio, the Detroit-based Sundberg-Ferar product innovation studio, and with Autodesk, a California engineering design software company. Once complete, product development will begin. At this rate, Hyundai hopes to have beta prototypes ready by 2023 or 2024.

It doesn't sound like this will be something for standard consumers. Though to be fair, we can’t imagine need something THIS versatile. Four-wheel drive is good enough for us.
