I'm a huge fan of irony, and this is about as ironic as a situation can get. AM General's South Bend, Indiana plant is now being sold to SF Motors, a subsidiary of China's Sokon. The plant was formerly used to create the holy-beast-6-miles-per-gallon-gas-guzzling-monster that is the Hummer. SF Motors really isn't into that, so they are going to turn it into an electric car factory.

Both companies have confirmed the transaction and the rights to the property will be handed over at the end of the year. The deal only covers the commercial plant, so military Humvees will still be produced at the plant as well.

After the factory changes hands, SF Motors will be dumping a pretty substantial amount of money into it. They are estimating that the cost to fully retool the plant will be around $30 million, allowing them to craft their next generation of electric vehicles. From destroying the environment to saving it, this is great news for the green initiative lovers of America.

SF Motors officially inaugurated its new headquarters in Silicon Valley earlier this month. Since opening, they have hired several former Tesla engineers to begin working on their vehicles. This was a really good pick up for SF Motors and hopefully they can start making some great vehicles over in Indiana.
