Stephan Winkelmann, the former Lamborghini CEO, took over Quattro GmbH last year. If Audi fans were hoping that he would try to build supercars, this news might be a bit disappointing to you. It seems as though Audi, like many other car manufacturers right now, are putting a big emphasis on the production of SUVs.

Here's a little snippet of the interview Winkelmann had with Top Gear:

Top Gear: What’s your biggest priority – an RS SUV, or a hardcore R8 ‘Performante’?

Stephan Winkelmann: The first one, and I’ll tell you why. Once you create a brand, you have to create a line-up. We have the R8, and we will do derivatives in different directions. But we have to create a line-up which is more worldwide-sellable than today’s.

If I put the money down, I have to make sure it’s equally distributed. But we will not stop doing ‘the icons’. They are part of what we’re all about. It’s not just about numbers, it’s about emotions. But we’re a small manufacturer, and we have to prepare the boat to sail in safe waters. That means different steps into electrification.

It looks like we aren't going to be seeing many supercars any time soon. I mean, I understand the concept. While supercars like the R8 are really cool, they don't have as large of a market as the standard SUV does. I mean, people eat up SUVs and if Audi needs sales, that's exactly where they're going to go.
