Great news for upcoming Ford and Lincoln owners: the automaker has reached a deal with Google to bring the Android operating system into future models, including Google Maps.

Ford recently entered a six-year contract with tech giant Google to have Android inside Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Google will provide cloud services and access to their massive data analytic systems. As a result, 2023 models will feature an Android OS on their infotainment systems.

The most noteworthy aspect of this deal, for consumers, is that it will support Google Maps, along with other select third party apps. Google Maps is by far the most popular GPS option for smartphone users. And often times, whatever alternative they’re using is built upon the Google Maps architecture.

Ford also stated that they will be developing new apps for the upcoming system. These apps will be customer oriented and will take advantage of the Google Cloud. Concepts like maintenance requests and “new car offers and trade in alerts” were mentioned, but no details were given.

Did that last part catch you uneasy? It did for us. Google has a history of collecting massive amounts of user data. They no doubt see the potential for that with vehicle tracking. Using that data to market towards us is a bit unnerving, in our opinions.

Either way, expect 2023 to 2029 Ford and Lincoln models to come with Android OS.
