There has been a trend lately of famous cars are going to auction. Though after this most recent revelation, I can't imagine anyone else topping this. A 1939 Mercedes-Benz 770K Grosser Offener Tourenwagen is going up to auction. What makes this vehicle so unique is that it was Adolf Hitler's personal vehicle, used by him and his staff during World War II.
Heading to auction in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 17, the sale of the vehicle has a few special conditions to it. According to auctioneer Rod Egan of Worldwide Auctioneers, ten percent of the final sale will be "donated and used to educate how and why the Holocaust happened and how to effectively prevent such similar atrocities in the future."
Only 88 1939 Mercedes-Benz 770K Grosser Offener Tourenwagen were made. and 5 770Ks used by Hitler and his staff survived since WWII. This particular car was seized by the United States Army in 1945, where it was used in France before being shipped to America. Eventually, the vehicle was taken in by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and used for parades. After that, it has been on display in various museums.
An impressive car for its age, the 770K has a 7.7-liter inline-8 engine, making it capable of speeds over 100 mph. To no surprise, the vehicle also has bulletproof windows and armor plating.
Egan hopes that the vehicle will continue to reside in museums. With such a unique vehicle having an even more unique history, no doubt the car will raise a fairly large sum of money.
