Sometimes I am boggled by the crazy things to come out of the automotive industry. This recent discovery is something absolutely all of us could use: self-healing paint.

Panoz, an American sports car company announced that all their future vehicles will come with a special coat of paint that both protects against the elements and shields from scrapes and scratches.

This magic coating is a ceramic-based material developed by Illinois firm Feynlab. It was first designed for circuit boards and electronic devices. Since they're already a fragile item, the self-restoring nature of the material allowed for additional protection. When applied with a suede cloth and cured, the ceramic bonds to the paint directly. This gives car exteriors more protection from the natural elements.

The video above explains in detail just exactly how the magic works. But to put it in layman's terms, the paint will even itself back out whenever heat is applied.

Such convenience doesn't come cheap. The self-healing coating will cost you about $2,500 and requires a clean and flaw-free coat of paint beforehand.
