Volkswagen announced some big details about the Golf earlier today. They've stated that $2.2 billion towards the 8th generation model, and that they hope to get the line into production by June of 2019.

Compact car division head, Karlheinz Hell, is leading development on the Golf. Hell says that the vehicle will have self-driving capabilities, a digital instrument cluster, and a great deal more connectivity than previous generations. Yes, that means internet.

“The next Golf will take Volkswagen into the era of fully connected vehicles with extended autonomous driving functions. It will always be online, and its digital cockpit and assistance systems will be the benchmark in terms of connectivity and safety.”

The Golf will be utilizing an up to date version of the MQB platform, something designed for compact and midsized cars. The new body is expecting a lower and wider exterior than the older models. We can see similarities between this and the VW's Golf GTE Sport concept we last saw at the 2015 Wörthersee Tour.

Details relating to the Golf's powertrain remains unknown. While we previously may have expected something diesel, electric vehicles are proving themselves more viable and potent than ever.
