The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a vehicle with a big name and even bigger ambition. The sportier nature makes it the perfect subject for Land Rover's latest publicity stunt: climbing Heaven's Gate.

The event begins with a Range Rover Sport speeding down China's Dragon Road. At the end of the road is the famous rock formation Heaven's Gate. To ascend this literal mountain, the vehicle has to take 99 turns, scale 999 steps, at a 45-degree angle. The Range Rover Sport was equipped with reinforced tires to handle the immense task ahead of it.

Land rover produced a video of the attempt, with interviews with locals accenting the beginning. It's fairly well directed, I admit. It had me feeling the intensity of the moment.

The total event time was 20 minutes and 47 seconds. Technically speaking, this is a new record. No vehicle has climbed the stairs before. Now that an established record has been set, I'm sure others will try.

This isn't Land Rover's first time doing crazy stunts. In 2016, a Range Rover Sport rode skis down a hill in Switzerland. In 2013, a Range Rover Sport set a record for driving across Saudi Arabia's Empty Quarter desert.

Land Rover is clearly looking to establish the Range Rover Sport as the ultimate vehicle. And I have to say, they're doing a good job.
