It was a bit of a bummer when Tesla shut down their referral program last month. We get it, it was cost-prohibitive. But the electric automaker doesn't want to end the idea entirely. The referral program has returned, but with a few strange gimmicks.

In the grand scheme, much of the program is the same but scaled down. Instead of offering 6 months of free charging, for example, they now offer a free 1,000 miles. But what has everyone's attention is "the chance" to win a free Model Y Founders Edition or Roadster.

Owners who refer others to a Tesla will have two chances to win a Model Y or even a Roadster Founder Edition. According to CEO Elon Musk, it's not a raffle or lottery, but whoever has the most referrals over a given timeframe will be the winner. Once you win, you cannot win again, to be clear. The company has prepared 12 Model Y crossovers and four Roadster Founder Editions for the referral program.

The previous program used to offer a 2 percent discount on a Roadster for ever referral given. This is not part of the new program. But hey, if you get enough referrals, you could theoretically get a free Roadster. That's still a discount, right?

The new referral program no longer offers a free Tesla Powerwall battery, new wheels, or the chance to watch as SpaceX rocket launch.

Does anybody need a Tesla?
