In a recent announcement, Mercedes-Benz plans to build a compact electric car at their Hambach, France-based plant.

The plant has a long history of building smart vehicles and electric cars, such as the EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour. The new model, branded as a mercedes, will be sourced out from France as an EQ. This suggests it will be considered a variant of the EQA compact electric hatchback concept the automaker showed off at last year's Frankfurt auto show. The concept featured a 60-kilowatt-hour battery with a reportedly 250 miles range.

In preparation of the new production task, Mercedes is investing around $588 million in the site. Aside from internal upgrades, the facility will also expand their facilities accordingly.

There's no word as to when we will see the vehicle yet. Though based on Mercedes' past statement to have 10 electric vehicles on the market by 2022 and 25 percent of its sales will be electric cars by 2025, it's safe to assume it'll be somewhere around those numbers.

Before this, we will likely see the EQC small SUV as the company's first EQ. With the same platform as the GLC, the EQC will have more than 70-kwh of battery capacity and a range of about 300 miles. Expect that to enter the public in 2019.
