No matter how many times I see it, a car-based pickup simply looks strange to me. Now a team of UK based Honda engineers has developed a Civic Type R Pickup.

The concept was presented Thursday during the SMMT Test Day driving event. Standing out more from your average pickup truck, the Civic Type R Pickup Truck, code-named Project P, uses the rear hatch in its bed design. This will make loading tall items more difficult. It also adapts its B-pillars backward, integrating sport bars from the roofline. Don't worry, they didn't spoil a perfectly good car to make this. This was a preproduction Type R. It likely would have been crushed down otherwise.

Given the Type R's power. This might be the fastest street-legal pickup on the market right now. It maintains its 306 horsepower, giving the Project P an estimated 0 to 62 mph time of around 6 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph. Honda is even interested in bringing it to the Nürburgring. The current pickup record there is 8:19.47. Perhaps the Project P can best it.
