At Saturday's Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Speedway on May 13th, things started fairly well. The race had gone through almost 200 laps without any major issues, but it eventually took a devastating turn. On Turn 2, Joey Logano's number 22 broke its front-right brake rotor, causing the car to take a hard left immediately. The left turn sent him straight into Danica Patrick's right rear end and spun her out.

The two vehicles then collided with the wall and caught fire from the impact. At that point, Aric Almirola had already committed to taking the outside lane. He had nowhere to go and plowed right into the side of Patrick. All three cars were destroyed, on fire, and while Patrick and Logano freely exited their vehicles, Almirola had to be cut from his car. He was taken off of the track on a stretcher and ended up getting airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center. He was held there overnight for observation.

After the wreck, Almirola was conscious, alert, and communicated with the safety personnel at Kansas Speedway. He suffered a compression fracture of his T5 vertebra, and will not be driving for a little while. We do not know when he is expected to return and we have no idea who will be replacing him on the track. An offer was extended to Carl Edwards to drive No. 43 as Almirola's replacement, but he declined. Check out the full video of the crash below.
