Alexa already helps thousands of families in their homes, so why not take her on the road? Amazon now offers Alexa support in vehicle infotainment systems with the Alexa Auto Software Development Kit.

This introduces a number of different core functions from the virtual assistant into your car. This includes phone calls, audio streaming, Navigational inputs, and displaying on-screen info. The driver could also operate various home functions, request weather reports, and more.

Amazon wants users to take Alexa with them and now offers an Alexa Auto software development kit (SDK). The online retailer announced Thursday that the SDK will integrate all of Alexa's core functions into a vehicle's infotainment system.

This will introduce new competition to the automotive entertainment systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Companies like BMW, Ford, and Toyota are already integrating the virtual assistant into their new vehicles, while Anker and Garmin have taken to producing aftermarket devices for older vehicles, allowing them to support Alexa.

Mercedes-Benz introduced Alexa support last year, allowing users to start their car, lock their doors, and other automotive action from their home Echo/Echo Dot system.
