Die hard fans of the 302 cubic inch era of mustangs can finally rejoice in the 2011 Ford Mustang GT. Ford has brought back the 5.0L in dual-overhead cam, all alluminum, 412 horsepower V-8 fashion. The new motor leaves the old 4.6 in the dust, and then some.
It has been rumored that Ford has underrated the 412 horses for whatever reason. Hype maybe? It doesn't matter. While Chevy has been duking it out with the Challenger SRT8, Ford has snuck in with a dirty sucker-punch. The 2011 Mustang is 200lbs lighter than the Camaro, and 400lbs lighter than the Challenger, weighing in at 3,605lbs. The 5.0 has impressive MPG numbers as well, rated at 26 highway and 17 city. Pretty nice for 400+ hp stock I'd say. The GT's 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds is a hair quicker than the bigger 6.2L 2010 Camaro SS's time of 4.9 seconds (both with 6-speed manuals).
With minimal bolt-ons the GT could easily hit the 500hp bracket. I'm itching to see what aftermarket products bring the numbers to. Ford states a base sticker price of $29,645 and just over $43,000 fully (and very nicely) loaded. The guys in Dearborn, Michigan made a good decision bringing back the 5.0. What a way to do it! Ford, welcome back.
Is that base price of $29k for the 3.7L V6... or a base GT 5.0 V8? Because that's nearly what, a $8-$10k increase over the old V6 base prices from years back, so basically you're paying more for the Mustang, to get the extra hp...if I'm right?
Yeah it's like they purposely nerfed the crap out of the weight on the V6 model as if to say, here's 300 hp, but oh wait it comes complete with a 200 lb solid lead bumper, so go by the V8 for $10k more.
Ya, the Ford site has the starting msrp for the v6 at $22,145. That's still a good amount for v6, but apparently the build quality of all the interior parts is legit. If it looks like metal, than it is metal. No more of that cheap plastic bullcrap. If I could afford it I'd be all over the GT. I bet a nice H/C/I + exhaust upgrade would make that thing purr like the devil hahaha
Ah ok that makes more sense, yah the $22k could probably be haggled down to $20 given some circumstances I'm sure, and perhaps the base GT could be had for $25.....I assume at least not the first year. Remember when the previous retro redesign came out, you'd read stories of stealerships charging $30k+ for a base V8 GT (apparently the msrp was $27-29k?), because they were selling out or purposely limiting the availability....funny stuff.
