With electric cars being the next big thing, it was only a matter of time before retail giant Amazon got involved. They've invested $700 million into electric start-up truck company Rivian.

The company believes that Rivian will help them achieve their future delivery goals, according to Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO Jeff Wilke in a prepared statement.

"We're inspired by Rivian's vision for the future of electric transportation. RJ [Scaringe, Rivian CEO] has built an impressive organization, with a product portfolio and technology to match. We're thrilled to invest in such an innovative company."

Rivian trucks will become a common delivery vehicle for Amazon in the future. While currently they're only offering a small pickup and an SUV, their modular platform could easily accommodate a top-hat style cube van.

No, Amazon isn't about to start selling electric trucks on their website. They just want them for industrial reasons. They're leaving the automotive branding to Apple for now.
