Automaker giant Volkswagen has recently confirmed their plans to build electric cars at their Chattanooga, Tennessee plant as soon as 2022.

VW will be investing $800 million in the plant to provide it with the necessary aspects of electric production. They will also employ an approximate 1,000 jobs directly at the plant, not counting new employment generated at their supplier firms.

The automaker is prepping up for the future of electrification with their own MEB modular platform. Applicable for a variety of vehicle times, the first use of the MEB platform will be on a Golf-sized hatch releasing later this year. Or if you're in the States, it'll be in a crossover based on the Crozz concept hitting markets in 2020.

There is not an official list of models to be produced at the Chattanooga plant, but we can estimate a few of them based on VW's recent behavior. An electric successor to the Microbus is marked for automotive markets in 2022, after all.

In the meantime, the Chattanooga plant will continue to produce the Passat and Atlas. A two-door variant to the Altas, known as the Atlas Cross Sport, will begin production later this year, as well.

We can expect more details and additional plans by VW in the near future. Stay tuned.
